Ten Years Ago: Orange County

Here’s my review of Orange County for Marcus and Stevi’s Ten Years Ago: Films in Retrospective blog.

Aw, geez, is it almost time for my high school reunion already? Ten years ago was my senior year, so it coincided pretty nicely with the release of Orange County. In the film, Colin Hanks’s Shaun Brumder is a senior anxiously trying as hard as he can to get accepted into Standford so he can escape his life in Orange County. Read the rest of this entry »

Ten Years Ago: Black Hawk Down

Here’s my last 2011 contribution to Marcus and Stevi’s Ten Years Ago: Films in Retrospective blog:

I consider Saving Private Ryan to be the definitive cinematic World War II experience. I hold Black Hawk Down in the same regard when it comes to contemporary 90s conflicts. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one that feels that way. One has to look no further than  the videogame industry’s many attempts to recreate the visceral experience of watching this film. There’s NovaLogic’s Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, which was based on the events of the Somali Civil War. But that game never reached the heights of popularity as 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which had an action sequence leading up to its most iconic moment where the player had to rescue a downed Black Hawk helicopter pilot in a hostile urban environment. Fast forward to 2011’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and that game has a mission that takes the player through a hostile Mogadishu. Read the rest of this entry »

Shades of Black and White

I’m currently trying out to be one of the artists for The Line it is Drawn on Comics Should Be Good. The way that feature works is Brian Cronin comes up with a theme each week, then specific suggestions within the theme are chosen on by the site’s twitter followers, and finally the artists choose to draw one of the suggestions. This week’s theme was to take a real or fictional person and give them powers to become a superhero or supervillain. One of the suggestions was Charlie Chaplin, so I gave him the same powers as the Shade. For those not familiar with the Starman villain, he’s an immortal gentleman dressed in black that can manipulate shadows to create monsters or teleport through space and time. I figured he matched up pretty well with Charlie Chaplin’s look. Plus, I always jump at the chance to do straight black and white pieces.

Next week’s theme is to team up two comic book characters that have never teamed up before. After that, Brian, a panel of judges, and the readers will then vote for the top three artists.

Work of Art Season 2: Episode 4 and 5 Review

Two episode reviews with a single click, how convenient! Let’s get something straight, I choose to release these reviews long after anyone would have any interest in reading them. Now that that’s out of the way, on to Week 4…

WEEK 4

I like kids, even though they generally ruin everything they come into contact with. It’s not their fault – kids are basically just wild animals that must be gradually trained to become well-adjusted adult humans.  In their natural state, however, they are raw, unfiltered, curious, whimsical, brutally honest beings. For that reason, the best artists are often the ones that never really grew up.
